Gamerscore Leaderboard V2!

E-mail

After a couple months of the first version being live, it became apparent that there was an inherent flaw with the PHP code. Every single time the page is loaded, it has to go through the list of users, and retrieve all the Gamertag information from the Duncan McKenzie API. And with more than around 5 users, this quickly maxed out the 30 seconds maximum execution time for the PHP server.

So the new idea was this: the web page gets the user list and gamerscore from a text file on the webserver. This text file is in turn updated by a console program running on a home PC, that updates all the users in the text file every 30 minutes. And that is basically that. If you load the GamerScore leaderboard now, you will notice a HUGE difference in the load time. Instead of 20 to 25 seconds, it now takes around 2 seconds.

Small Twitter apps..

E-mail

I was browsing around twitter the other day, and saw a small website that someone had created that put all your friends into a single PNG file as a montage, which I thought was a cool idea. The only issue was the fact that it didnt automatically update. After having a quick poke around with the API and the image library for PHP, i came up with this:

ZPLR - Current update (or lack of)

E-mail

For the last couple of months, I've basically done nothing on this game...

Long story short, I was ill and off for a week, and had a random idea for a 'small' side project, that I figured I could knock out relatively fast, and just get something up on community games. As it is, its now about 80% done, with the rest looking to be finished in the next week, and art on the way from a very talented artist :)

I'm still not going to say what this project is, but its a nice simple game. The gameplay prototype took an hour and a half. The rest of the dev time has been on extra features and effects, all of which will be used again in ZPLR, so its been a fairly productive project in all.

I was recently asked for the source code for the leaderboard to use on a community website, which sounded like a good idea. And here it is:

I've joined up on this site, and so far it seems like a nice place to hang out, good people :)  I'm 4th on this one though, with a LONG way to go to the top!

As of today, World Sports Party (also known as 'Vacation Sports' in the US) hit No.1 in the Wii Top Sellers Chart on http://www.play.com. Not bad for a budget game!
